Okay, even though it’s release date is still a fair way off, I’m starting to get really excited for Battlefield 3, and only after two videos!
There was first the teaser trailer which revealed almost nothing apart from a few flashes of tanks and helicopters.
The newly released Battlefield 3 Premiere Gameplay clip however, has been the one to make my eyes bulge.
I’m a big DICE fan, the developers of the highly acclaimed Battlefield: Bad Company series, and have often defended the latest installment in the Medal Of Honor series, in which they were responsible for the multiplayer.
Anyway, the premiere gameplay clip shows a few shorts snippets of gameplay from what appears to be the campaign. The graphics look simply amazing. The sprawling, urban middle-east environment is incredible and I hope the rest of the game lives up to this first impressions. The dark rooms aslo looked good but not as eye-catching as the outdoor space. There is a brief shot of you and a few squad mates running through a tight alleyway which also looks fantastic.
The campaign looks fairly squad focused from the short clip, and DICE have been know to have this as a main feature of their campaigns. Prone looks like it also makes a feature in this game, something new for DICE, with you and a couple of squad mates taking low cover on top a building and then leaping up to fire a rocket.
One scene that really stood out to me was when you and a couple more infantry men run out into the middle of a street. It then cuts to another shot of someone firing down onto what appears to be the same street but from height and the other side of the road. It maybe that the campaign frequently switches between characters, similar to that of Medal Of Honor, or it could just be that the clips are not in a chronological order.
What I could also see once I paused the video on this shot was that the enemies seem to be all over the shop. Taking cover behind cars, crouching behind walls or legging it across the footpath. There doesn’t seem to be a clear pattern or direction and I hope this means intelligent AI. You fire upon this beaten up old car that eventually explodes brilliantly, creating a realistic shockwave.
The character modelling and weapons are also amazing with the weapons looking slightly better to the ones in Medal Of Honor. After watching the video multiple times, it looks like a more realistic, graphically better and grittier Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, and I really hope DICE pulls it off.
Don’t let my comparisons to Medal Of Honor worry you, this games is starting to look really cool, and I’m getting more and more excited.
